Mary Close

"What can I say about the human form as subject? It is endlessly fascinating, beautiful, ugly, old, young, funny, sad, sexy, grotesque, expressive, boring, poignant and profound ~ a never ending source of revelation for narcissistic beings like ourselves. During the course of my career I have enjoyed exploring many of these aspects of the human figure. It is rich as both a form and because it is a subject loaded with associations for virtually everyone.

All of my work starts out with attention to composition and design. At times I stay in that mode. Many of my cropped figure compositions are basically abstract works where I indulge in the lushness of sensuous rolls of flesh or the angles of elbows without regard to anything else. I am consistently drawn to the sculptural qualities of the figure and its endless variations."
