“Balance, this is what my work is all about.” Stretched, pulled, leaning, thrust, counterthrust all of the terms that describe balance can be attributed to Tom Doyle’s wood sculptures. Whether monumental or intimate in scale these same characteristics pervade all of these works and Doyle’s eye for following how his individual wood forms want to interact and his ability to merge this interaction are vital to his work. His underlying love of tools and craftsmanship can be seen in each sculpture. The natural surfaces, variations of color from differing woods and the natural aging that occurs bring all of these elements into unified forms that evoke a powerful sense of both fragility and endurance. |
