Merrill Wagner

 

Wagner states,“There are certain aspects of nature, such as flowers, that are intimate. You can pick them. And they are temporary. But there are other things, for instance, if you look at the ocean, or if you go to the desert…you can't change that. You can't influence it in any way. It doesn't care about you. You just have to be there as a little observer. And I think the larger paintings – the steel paintings – are more that kind of experience.” This exhibition presents the steel paintings of New York artist Merrill Wagner. Executed with rust preventative paint these works convey a sense of vastness and the unmovable. Her horizon line anchors these to the earth. Merrill's use of color and spare marks bring you inside of her spaces while other works become pure objects.
