"Orange Ground Portrait" "Slow Start"

Bennington - Montreal - New York, 1965-90
Dec 11- Jan. 3, 2005

"Bennington - Montreal - New York, 1965-90" will open at New Arts Gallery on December 11 th exhibiting paintings, sculpture and paper works that evolved out of the aesthetic revolution of the 1960's. Some have suggested that Bennington was to 'color painting' what Giverny was to Impressionism and Cronin was in the midst of it. These paintings were executed there at Bennington and explored what to this day is still considered a vital link to that time, the interaction of color, which Albers and others committed their artistic careers to.

Cronin goes a step further with this work and makes form equally as vital within the scope of his study and sets his work apart. In 1986 he summered in Montreal and committed himself to works on paper. He completed 60 while there. He considers them deliberate, direct and what he describes as 'almost like playing chess' with moves and choices being considered then executed. From the early 1980's to 1990 Cronin concentrated on the making of small scale metal sculptures that were earmarked to be exhibited in New York.

Lippincott Sculpture Fabricators, who also created work for artists such as Claus Oldenberg, Keith Haring and many others, undertook the task of translating Cronin's three dimensional explorations, which clearly contained the color sensibilities that he had explored during the 1960's when he was surrounded by the influence of Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Larry Poons and others who were at Bennington at that time. This exhibition will include 9 sculptures from his time at Lippincott and combined with his paintings and works on paper define an influence and an aesthetic that have become integral to the modern art world.

This exhibition will continue until January 3 rd with an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, December 11 th from 2-5 PM. New Arts Gallery is located at 513 Maple Street, Litchfield, CT.
